James 3:2 (AMP)
2 For we all often stumble and fall and offend in many things. And if anyone does not offend in speech [never says the wrong things], he is a fully developed character and a perfect man, able to control his whole body and to curb his entire nature.

  • The secrete to a faith filled life is “Not Stumbling in Words”…”saying the right things”
  • We can control (Bridle) our lives with words.

3 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. (Control its destination)
4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. (Controls its destination)
5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; (Controls its destination) and it is set on fire by hell.

  • Are our lives where they are due to the words we have been speaking?
  • Can we change the course of our lives by speaking different words…words that come from above.

James 3:7-10 (AMP)

For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea animal, can be tamed and has been tamed by human genius (nature).

8  But the human tongue can be tamed by no man. It is a restless (undisciplined, irreconcilable) evil, full of deadly poison.

9  With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who were made in God’s likeness!

10  Out of the same mouth come forth blessing and cursing. These things, my brethren, ought not to be so.

  • Only blessings should come from our mouths
  • How does God speak? With edifying words He intends to come to pass.

Proverbs 18:20-21 (AMP)
20 A man’s [moral] self shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; and with the consequence of his words he must be satisfied [whether good or evil].
21 Death and life are in the power of the (Devil?  God?) Tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].

  • Filled and satisfied – not with hard work (Though a must) but with our words.
  • There is a lot of hard workers that undermine themselves everyday…with their words.
  • Some people work 2 jobs and are poor…hard work + good words = filled and satisfied

Isaiah 55:11 (NKJV)
11  So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

  • God’s words don’t just communicate…they accomplish something.
  • Not just expressing thoughts and feelings…but to do someyhing.
  • God’s words SHALL…Accomplish and Prosper in the thing which I SENT it…
  • Words are Sent to Accomplish and Prosper things.

Romans 4:16-18 (NKJV)
16  Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all
17  (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed–God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did;
18  who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, “So shall your descendants be.”

  • Have made…it was done 25yrs before it manifest.
  • Calling things that be not as though they did.
  • “So shall your descendants BE.

God speaks edifying words that changes the destiny of people’s lives.

We must change our words to edify and change the course of our lives and the lives of others.

Abraham

Genesis 12:1-4 (NKJV)
1 Now the LORD had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you.
2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
4 So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

  • God is calling things that do not exist as though they did.
  • God called him “a great nation”
  • God Spoke the Blessing (Gen 12)
  • Dust of the earth (Gen13)
  • Stars in the sky (Gen 15)
  • Walk through covenant blood (Gen 15)
  • Name Change (Gen 17)
  • Declares “Its time” (Gen 18)

In spite of Abrams unbelief God brought him to belief and a great nation came out of him…

It took 100’s of years to get that “great nation” but it became as God said so.

God spoke to Abram and he became what God said he was.

Words changed the course of Abrams life like a steering wheel.

Isaiah 55:11 (NKJV)
11  So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

Gideon

The Midianite oppress Israel for 7yrs

Judges 6:11-16 (NKJV)

11  Now the Angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth tree which was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from the Midianites.

12  And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!”

13  Gideon said to Him, “O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.”

14  Then the LORD turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?”

15  So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

16  And the LORD said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.”

  • V11 Gideon is hiding from the Midianites
  • V12 “you mighty man of valor…call thing that are not as though they are.
  • V13 Gideon “You’re not with us…we are in bondage to the Midianites.”
  • V14 God ignores Gideon’s words and calls him “mighty”…Have I not sent you? My words do not come back void.
  • V 15 Gideon “I have no status and I’m weak and no good.
  • V16 God ignored his whining and declared him victorious over the Midianites.

Gideon takes God up on it and with 300 men destroys the Midianites.

God spoke to Gideon and he became what God said he was.

Words changed the course of Gideon’s life like a steering wheel.

Jeremiah

Jeremiah 1:4-10 (NKJV)
4  Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying:
5  “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
6  Then said I: “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”
7  But the LORD said to me: “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ For you shall go to all to whom I send you, And whatever I command you, you shall speak.
8  Do not be afraid of their faces, For I am with you to deliver you,” says the LORD.
9  Then the LORD put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me: “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.
10  See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, To root out and to pull down, To destroy and to throw down, To build and to plant.”

  • Before I formed you, before you were born, I ordained you…call thing that are not as though they are.
  • V10 “I HAVE this day…”

God spoke to Jeremiah and he became what God said he was.

Words changed the course of Jeremiah’s life like a steering wheel

Ephesians 4:29-32 (NKJV)
29  Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. (This is how God speaks…good, edifying words)
30  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31  Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.
32  And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.

  • Our mouths either corrupt or edify
  • Edify = build up, strengthen, impart ability. (This is God’s way)
  • The Holy Spirit is grieved at corrupt talk
  • V31…corrupt words
  • V32…edifying words

How do we speak?

How do we speak to our children?

  • Your no good, never amount to anything, you are a mess up.
  • OR…I value you, you are successful, you are wise.

How do we speak about our spouse?

  • They don’t love me, they can’t make a good decision, and they seem to fail at everything.
  • OR…They love me and value me, they have great wisdom, everything they put their hand to prosper.

How do we speak about ourselves?

  • I’m ugly, stupid, a failure, broke and poor, sick all the time, depressed, no one love me…ect
  • OR…I beautiful, smart, successful, out of debt and prosperous, healed and well, life is good, many that love and value me.
